Mismatch on the first day of work: what to do if the job doesn't fit?

Congratulations! You've got a new job and have already had your first day at work

But maybe you noticed on the first day that something wasn't right? Now you're wondering how best to behave. Don't worry, you're not alone. In this article, you'll find out what you can do if you realize on your first day at work that the job or company isn't right for you.

How do you now recognize what exactly doesn't fit?

The job description and the interview were promising. But you didn't like your first day at work. Now you're unhappy.

Why? Maybe the tasks didn't appeal to you, or you didn't feel comfortable in the company. You may even have doubts about your own abilities.

The first day at work can be overwhelming as you have to process many new impressions. It is therefore important that you take some time now to think about what exactly is making you unhappy.

Not sure how best to start? It's simple - grab a pen and paper and write down your thoughts. For example, answer the following questions for yourself:

  • What expectations did you have for your first day at work?
  • How did you feel during the day?
  • Did you feel comfortable and welcome?
  • How was your first meeting with your colleagues?
  • What tasks did you have?
  • How did you like the tasks?
  • Were you able to complete the tasks?
  • Did you feel insecure? And if so, how and why?

How are you dealing with the challenges at your new workplace?

Once you have identified the reasons for your dissatisfaction, you can now work on finding a solution. As a general rule: don't give up straight away! Even if the first impression was disappointing, a lot can change. Keep a positive attitude.

Here are some examples of problems and possible solutions that can occur:

Always remember that you don't have to be able to do and know everything on your first day. Don't be afraid of difficulties or to ask your colleague or supervisor for support or explanations several times.

If you can't find your own solution, first contact someone you trust. They can give you specific advice and look at the situation with a neutral eye.

If you still have the feeling after a few days that it's not right, talk to your line manager. You can look for solutions together. There are often various ways in which your employer can support you.

For example, there is further training to learn skills, adaptation of tasks or transfers. Stay flexible and be prepared to try out different options.

Despite possible solutions, your dissatisfaction increases. How do you deal with this professionally?

If your dissatisfaction increases despite possible solutions, you should still remain professional. Always remember that the probationary period is not just for the employer, but also for you! This means that you have the option of terminating the employment relationship prematurely at any time with two weeks' notice.

If you decide to resign, that's perfectly fine. But remember: be constructive in your criticism and don't reproach the employer. By voicing your criticism to the employer, you are giving them the opportunity to improve in the future. However, don't feel pressured to give a reason for your early termination of employment. You don't have to!

Don't see this dismissal as the end of your career and don't blame yourself. Because the professional mismatch is a new opportunity for you. It offers you the opportunity to develop a clear idea of what is particularly important to you in a new job.

Lessons for the future: What do you learn from this?

Every experience, even a negative one, can offer valuable lessons. Use this opportunity to learn more about yourself and your professional goals. Perhaps you will realize what you will pay more attention to in the future during a job interview. See every experience as an opportunity to grow and develop.
